A field guide for credit cards

Keep statement balance, minimum due, and interest separate

Read a credit-card statement without confusing the statement balance, minimum payment, current balance, fees, interest, or APR categories.

What this document can establish

Read the roles before the total

A credit-card statement contains several legitimate numbers that answer different questions. The statement balance closes one billing cycle; the minimum due is the smallest printed payment requirement for the due date; the current balance may include activity after closing.

ExpenseReader reconciles the statement using previous balance, payments, purchases, refunds, fees, and printed interest. It reports APRs and balance categories exactly as stated, but it does not invent a daily-balance history, predict payoff, or provide credit advice.

Documents in scope: Consumer credit-card periodic statements.

Category-specific analysis

Three reading lenses

01

Label every balance

Do not replace statement balance with minimum due or a later online current balance. Preserve the date and role of each amount.

02

Reconcile the cycle

Use signed payments and refunds against purchases, fees, and interest to reproduce the closing statement balance.

03

Do not reverse-engineer interest

A printed APR is not enough to recreate interest without the issuer's balance method, daily activity, categories, and grace-period facts.

Fully worked synthetic example

Fictional credit-card statement

Monthly periodic statement

Juniper Card Services is fictional. The statement shows a previous balance, signed payment, purchases, refund, fee, interest, closing balance, and minimum due.

Document fact

Previous balance / payment

$800.00 / -$500.00

The payment reduces the balance; preserving its sign is essential to the reconciliation.

Document fact

Purchases / refund

$260.00 / -$40.00

New purchases add to the cycle while the refund reduces it.

Document fact

Fee / interest

$10.00 / $8.00

These are separate printed line items; the statement does not provide enough daily data to recompute interest.

Math check

Statement balance / minimum due

$538.00 / $35.00

The $538 closing balance reconciles. The $35 minimum due is a distinct payment amount, not another balance component.

Independent calculation$800 previous - $500 payment + $260 purchases - $40 refund + $10 fee + $8 interest = $538 statement balance
What it supports

The statement balance reconciles and the page separately states a $35 minimum due. No conclusion is made about the current balance after the closing date.

What it does not establish

The sample does not establish daily balances, grace-period status, transaction authorization, future interest, payment allocation, or the best payment choice.

Reasonable verification questions

Ask for the missing bridge

  1. What are the closing date, due date, statement balance, and minimum due?
  2. Do signed payments and refunds reconcile with purchases, fees, and interest?
  3. Which APR applies to each printed balance category?
  4. Does the statement provide enough detail to understand a fee or interest line without estimating?
  5. Could post-closing activity explain a different current balance shown elsewhere?
